This page will serve as my own scratch pad for my preferred ring sizes, which you can also benefit from! I am continually adding to this page, and hope to add pictures and links to tutorials of each weave as well, so check back often. Sizes list the wire gauge (AWG) and the mandrel size, or inner diameter.
3-in-3 -- Aspect Ratio: 3.75
14g 6.0mm - almost 4"/1ozt
16g 5.0mm - almost 6.25"/1ozt
18g 3.75mm - a smidge over 9.5"/1ozt
Byzantine -- Aspect Ratio: 3.5
14g 5.5mm - 3.8" per 1ozt
16g 4.5mm - almost 6"/1ozt
18g 3.5mm - (a smidge over) 10.25"/1ozt
20g 2.75mm - not quite 17"/1ozt
Jens Pind Linkage
12g 6.0mm -- this makes the most *fantastically* thick chain - very heavy!
14g 4.75mm
16g 4.0mm
18g 3.0mm
20g 2.25mm
Mobius rings:
Mobius rings (or infinity knots, or love knots, or a myriad of other names) are not especially picky about size and is very subjective. They also are fantastic design elements to incorporate in a myriad of ways. I've seen 16g 8mm mobius rings which look lovely. I prefer a bigger size, which I've listed below:
16g 10mm
18g 8mm
19g 7mm
20g 6mm
Celtic Visions
Tutorial
You need both sizes for this weave:
16g 6.0mm
18g 4.0mm
Celtic Visions Star:
Tutorial
The same as Celtic Visions, but an additional 3rd ring size is needed to complete the "star" effect.
16g 6.0mm
18g 4.0mm
18g 3.0mm
Note: In brass and copper, use 16g 6.25mm instead of 6.0mm. The metal is much softer, which makes a tighter ring, thus a larger size is required. This is for the star only, the bracelet is OK with 16g 6.0 for copper/brass.
Japanese 12-in-2
For my Lace bracelet, I love this size:
19g 4.0mm
21g 2.5mm
For my posie earrings, I like these sizes:
18g 5.0mm OR 19g 5.0mm (5.25 in either gauge is nice for a slightly larger size as well.)
20g 2.5mm
European 4-in-1:
This is another weave where the ring size is fairly subjective and to the weaver's taste. The larger the ring, the looser and more open the weave will be.
19g 4.0mm -- This is the size I use when I teach this weave in a class
20g 3.0mm -- this is my preferred size, and the size I used in my "Sterling Silk" bracelet. European 4-in-1 in this size is definitely classified as "micro maille" - good eyesight and/or magnifiers needed!
Dragonscale:
These are such perfect sizes, I have not yet tested any others.
18g 6.0mm
18g 4.0mm
These sizes are tested in sterling only at this time.
Shaggy Loops
This is another weave that doesn't require a specific ring size and is up to the weaver's preference. That being said, my favorites are:
18g 5.0mm
19g 4.0mm - 9"/1ozt
The 19g 4.0mm or 18g 4.0mm ring is perfect for sliding a 6/0 seed bead onto the ring. You can even fit 2 seed beads on 1 ring, and it makes a lovely colorful weave (see my Ripple bracelet as an example).
As you can see this is a work in progress. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions or would like more recommendations.
